Zach Decker Appointed CEO of Handi Quilter, Ushering in a New Era for Quilting Community

Zach Decker, renowned for transforming brands like KT Tape, steps in as Handi Quilter CEO, promising innovation, inclusivity, and growth while honoring quilting as a creative, community-driven art form.

Handi Quilter, a global leader in long-arm and mid-arm quilting machines, has named Zach Decker as its new Chief Executive Officer, marking the start of a fresh chapter for the celebrated quilting brand. Decker’s appointment follows an extensive national search to find a successor for Mark Hyland, who is retiring after two decades at the helm.

Decker, a seasoned executive and creative strategist, brings a unique blend of marketing expertise and community-building skills to Handi Quilter. His career includes notable success as Chief Marketing Officer at KT Tape, where he transformed the brand from a niche athletic product into a household name embraced by both elite competitors and everyday fitness enthusiasts. His work at KT Tape resonated deeply with communities, a skill set perfectly aligned with Handi Quilter’s mission to empower quilters around the world through innovation, education, and connection.

“Zach is not only an accomplished brand builder but also someone who understands the power of passionate communities,” said John S. Castle, President and CEO of Branford Castle Partners and Chairman of Handi Quilter’s Board. “His ability to inspire trust and broaden relevance is exactly what Handi Quilter needs as we continue expanding our reach and supporting creativity in the quilting world.”

Decker’s strategic leadership at KT Tape included major advancements in brand strategy, product innovation, and marketing across multiple channels. He played a key role in the company’s successful transaction earlier this year, integrating core values into a broader audience framework. His previous roles at major companies like Kraft Foods, The Hershey Company, and Cricut further solidified his commitment to democratizing creativity—not just for the elite but for everyone interested in crafting, making, and quilting.

For Decker, quilting is more than a pastime; it’s a community-driven art form. His leadership philosophy is rooted in accessibility and inspiration, principles shaped by his time as an officer in the U.S. Navy and later honed during his MBA program at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business. “Quilting is an art form steeped in tradition and connection,” Decker said. “My goal is to make innovation meaningful and communication sharper so more people feel drawn to and empowered by quilting.”

Handi Quilter, widely recognized for its quality, innovation, and educational support, is poised for continued growth under Decker’s leadership. The brand is celebrated for its community-focused approach, a legacy built by retiring CEO Mark Hyland over his 20-year tenure.

As Handi Quilter looks to the future, the company expressed deep gratitude to Hyland for his contributions in establishing the brand’s global reputation. Founded in 1999 by Laurel Barrus, Handi Quilter continues to support quilters through a worldwide network of retailers, educators, and programs, staying true to its guiding principle: “Designed by Quilters, for Quilters®.”

With Decker at the helm, Handi Quilter’s future is set to deliver both innovation and connection, ensuring that quilting remains an inclusive and inspiring creative outlet for generations to come.
