In his Novelist Post interview, Barker recalls his boyhood home, an eerie Tudor-style house in the woods whose isolation fed his imagination: “Local kids claimed the woods were haunted, and my sister and I fuelled those rumours with ghostly tales. As children, our imaginations run wild, and I like to think I’ve held onto that spark, even a little bit.” It is this unique blend of childhood curiosity and adult precision that defines his ability to craft unforgettable narratives.

Days later, King personally responded, granting Barker permission to use the character Leland Gaunt from Needful Things.

Another highlight of Barker’s career was Dracul, co-authored with Bram Stoker’s great-grandnephew Dacre Stoker, utilising the original notes and journals of the legendary author. “I’m a huge fan of Dracula, so when the family approached me, I couldn’t possibly say no,” he shares. Barker credits Dacre’s encyclopaedic knowledge of the Stoker legacy as indispensable. Through Dracul, Barker wove both historical and supernatural threads together, crafting a tale that serves as both prequel and homage to one of literature’s greatest horror novels.

When it comes to collaboration, Barker thrives on partnerships, particularly his work with James Patterson. Writing Death of the Black Widow, Barker learned invaluable lessons from Patterson, describing it as a “masterclass in thriller writing.” The pair created an intricate, fast-paced thriller that showcases Barker’s ability to innovate while embracing commercially successful dynamics.

Barker’s latest bestseller, Behind a Closed Door, exemplifies his knack for combining psychological intrigue with contemporary relevance. The idea of technology invading privacy stemmed from a personal experience: noting targeted ads on his phone after discussing home renovations over dinner.
