Raja Ali Measures Leadership in the Opportunities Other People Gain
Raja Ali, Group Chief Executive of The IBD Partnership Group.
The IBD Partnership Group chief executive’s account of growth and disruption reveals a leadership approach grounded in listening, trust and a shared purpose.
In his Entrepreneur Prime cover interview, Raja Ali describes building an international education organisation from a bedroom business. His reflections offer a practical view of leadership: protect the mission, adapt the route and recognise the team behind every lasting achievement.
A leader can describe growth through offices, markets and revenue. Raja Ali’s account begins with expansion but returns repeatedly to people. Asked about his proudest achievement, the Group Chief Executive of The IBD Partnership Group points to his team and the legacy it can create for future generations.
Speaking to Entrepreneur Prime for its Issue 13 cover feature, Ali describes developing a business started in his bedroom in 2005 into an international organisation with eight offices. He says the group has supported more than 60,000 learners. Those figures establish the scale of his account; his explanation of how relationships work reveals the management philosophy behind it.
Trust is part of the operating model
International partnerships require more than agreement on a commercial objective. Ali describes working across different cultures, expectations and ways of doing business. Listening becomes a practical leadership skill because assumptions that hold in one setting may fail in another.
His approach rests on patience, consistency and mutual respect. For leaders entering unfamiliar markets, the implication is useful: local understanding cannot simply be replaced by confidence in a model that has worked elsewhere. The relationship itself requires attention.
That outlook also shapes his definition of authority. Ali emphasises learning from people whose experiences differ from his own, rather than treating the senior role as evidence that he already has the answers.
Adapt the route and retain the purpose
Brexit tested that approach. Ali says the group’s UK operations faced exclusion from many European-funded opportunities and describes the following years as difficult. His response was to pursue other European markets, build new partnerships and seek alternative routes to growth.
‘Leadership is not about avoiding setbacks; it is about how you respond to them,’ he tells Entrepreneur Prime.
His account suggests a distinction between a mission and the arrangements used to deliver it. The commitment to widening educational opportunity remained; the partnerships and markets through which the group pursued it had to change. That is a demanding balance for any chief executive because continuity and adaptation must happen together.
A legacy carried by the team
Ali’s educational priorities extend the same thinking beyond the organisation. He argues that access depends on support as well as an invitation: financial barriers, application processes and institutional resources can all shape who participates.
For a business leader, that raises a wider question about performance. A programme’s reach matters, but so does whether people can use it. Ali’s ambition is to expand international opportunities while preserving the human purpose that gave the business its direction.
